The Philosophy of Thomas Hobbes
Regarded as one of the most influential English figures of the 17th century, Thomas Hobbes undoubtedly helped to shape the western philosophic tradition, most notably in the realm of politics with his seminal work "The Leviathan". I would be remiss if I did not add that it is my hope that this video will not be "Nasty, brutish, and short".

The Philosophy of Averroes (Ibn Rushd)
Переглядів 8 тис.10 місяців тому
Here we will travel back to the year 1150 of the common era in order that we may illuminate one who is perhaps the most influential figure of Islamic philosophy. He was known to his people as Abu al-Walid Muhammad ibn Rushd and to the western philosophic tradition as simply Averroes. Sources: To the generous men and women who published these resources, especially Stanford’s article concerning A...
The Philosophy of Giordano Bruno
Переглядів 26 тис.Рік тому
The philosophy of Giordano Bruno was unique for the Neoplatonic and Aristotelian dominated era during which it was conceived. Its uniqueness derives from its ability to combine metaphysics, physics, psychology, and ethics into a philosophy that, while presented in an unsystematic and at times seemingly disjointed way, manages to shine with an inner coherence. Though this video may seem lengthy ...
The Philosophy of Thales

The Life and Philosophy of Aristotle

The legacy and influence of Aristotle has been almost without comparison in the history of European philosophy, so much so that deviating from his thought during the Middle Ages would have been met with animosity and ridicule. His reign of “over a millennium of intellectual history came to an end only with the audacious irreverence of Occam and Ramus, the experimental science of Roger Bacon, an...

My apologies for the faulty frame size of the video, though I hope you are able to enjoy it regardless. I hope to bring some advice from "Seneca's Letters From a Stoic" regarding adversity and what might be done to overcome it. Much, but not all, of what is spoken about here is taken from the 78th letter to his friend Lucilius. Toward the end of the video I have left some chapters which I recom...
Does Determinism Rob The Human Experience of All Moral Value?
Переглядів 3,9 тис.Рік тому
What would a largely deterministic society look and behave like? Would it be, as some imagine, a more merciful and just society, or as some others suppose, a veritable wasteland where lawless immorality, cruelty, and hopelessness reign supreme? In this video I hope to answer this contentious question and to bring some clarity to an otherwise esoteric matter. Music: Adrift Among Infinite Stars -...
Spinoza | Why We Suffer and What We Can Do About It

What did a great and wise man such as Spinoza think of human suffering? There are many complexities in the philosophy of Spinoza which can make understanding this question difficult at times, and I am sure after this video more reading will be necessary to clarify it further. We must remember that Spinoza is not a philosopher who can simply be read, he must be studied. Below are the sources I h...

Soren Kierkegaard | Philosophy's Melancholic Dane

When European Philosophy emerged from the 18th century it was enveloped in what can only be called a metaphysical fog. 5 Reasons The Philosopher Should Study History

"De te fabula narratur" "Of you the story is told" as was said by the Roman poet Horace. There are many reasons for the philosopher to study history, these are jus...

In 1933 there was an address given by the Pulitzer Prize winning historian and philosopher Will Durant, and any of you who have seen much of the videos I’ve published will know the admiration I hold for this great mind. John Dewey's Educational Ideal

For John Dewey there was nothing as important as education, not only on an individual level, but also on the societal. He was a champion of democracy and longed to see it thrive, but in order for this to occur he knew that we must first take the necessary steps to build an educational system which allowed for each citizen to make full use of his/her capacity. The Life of Friedrich Nietzsche is one which vacillates, frequently I might add, between Tragic and productive. I think you would be hard pressed to find an individual who does not know of Nietzsche. Whatever level your knowledge of his philosophy may be at, ho...

He had a lot of really good philosophy. Jesus also said “those who live by the sword shall die by it.” Machavellian philosophy didn’t account for a lot of human unpredictability. It’s a general guideline of maintaining order. Which is why you also see this principle of “ends justifying the means” but you can’t predict the consequences of the actions. Watch every Mafia film and it all ends all the same

Spinoza’s philosophy is more than having an intellectual conversation, but to understand and live his ideas. Spinoza’s Ethics communicates a method of increasing the powers of one’s mind by improving its understanding. It’s possible to free oneself from emotional confusions by understanding that free will is an illusion and that we follow the laws of nature. I have dedicated my life to Spinoza’s philosophy and now I teach it. You can find my work on my website or on UA-cam.

Watching this reminds me how Fcked the US truly is in its current age. We were at one point close to this. Now we are beyond gone. I hate the fact that we're a laughing stock now. Adapting Aristotles' views in our current age won't cure us, but it could definitely undo a lot of the damage.

To save Athens from making the same mistake twice? He was a savior to himself upon fleeing no matter what we'd like to believe. He knew they would make "that mistake" twice and kill him. He is not stupid but hardly to be grouped with Socrates.

I've firstly thought of fame, the glory of honey-sweet taste, slowly inflating my soul, leading it to process of dying. Then I desired to be known, not to be admired, nor treaten hatefully, only to be read about in books, shown on paintings or photographs. Finally I understood, that all I needed was my value, to show I am able to stand up, create, show I am worth my life, and be remembered, as it will give myself immortality. It disgusted me; every step I take is making the darkness thicker, but strengthens my senses.

Fabulous channel thank you so much. I love the tone of your voice too. Started with Western philosophy beginning with Thales, presocratics, socrates, plato and Aristotle at the moment. But the Stoics began it all for me. Philosophy gives me a way to navigate life, and developing a personal philosophy from the wisdom before us is such a gift. It also gives me a good use for this thing atop my body.
